Fridays are for the Foundation! We are continuing to highlight the Tipp City Foundation Board Members on Fridays! Be sure to check in each week to learn more about each of our dedicated volunteers!

Today, we are introducing Richard Bender, our board President and fearless leader. Richard retired from the United Way in 2023, has served the Tipp City Foundation since 2021. His commitment to service and deep understanding of the non-profit world has been an invaluable addition to the Tipp City Foundation.

Richard's favorite quote: “Don’t go where the path may lead, go instead where there is no path…and leave a trail” -Ralph Waldo Emerson

The person in Richard's life who has influenced him and shaped his perspective: "A former youth leader saw my potential and gave me opportunities to develop my
leadership skills and helped me become a better listener."

The person who inspires Richard now: "My wife, Cheryl. She has such a passion for social justice and she goes out of her way to help people with limited opportunities."

The advice Richard would give to a young person today:
"Find something that you are passionate about and then figure out a way to make a
living doing it.

Richard's favorite thing to do in his spare time: "Cheryl and I love to travel. The world is a beautiful place and we are doing our best to see as much of it as we can. We also love going to coffee shops or trying new places to eat locally."

What serving on the Tipp City Foundation means to Richard: "For most of my career, I was on nonprofit boards as a way to give back to my community. Then late in my career I became the director of the local United Way and this allowed me to learn how nonprofits operated. Now that I’m retired the Tipp Foundation gives me the opportunity to utilize all those skills. Being involved with the Tipp Foundation is very satisfying because we strive to improve our community."

Tipp City Public Library has launched its newly digitized newspaper archive, now available online at https://tippcity.historyarchives.online

This exciting resource preserves invaluable local history and makes it accessible to residents, researchers, students, historians, and genealogy enthusiasts alike. The Library will be providing access to The Tipp Herald (1933–1935) and The Tippecanoe City Herald (1869–1871). These publications offer a richly detailed chronicle of Tipp City and surrounding communities—capturing daily life, community events, local government, businesses, and social history across generations.

This ambitious project was made possible through a generous grant from the Wahl Family Fund, awarded via the Tipp City Foundation. The support covered the costs of digitization, metadata creation, quality control, and the hosting infrastructure required to serve the archives online.

The Tipp Foundation is excited to partner with the library in ensuring our community’s heritage is safeguarded for future generations.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and an opportunity to reflect on the impact of breast cancer in our community. According to BreastCancer.org, approximately 1 in 8 women (13%) in the U.S. will develop invasive breast cancer at some point in their life.

At the Tipp Foundation, we are committed to supporting health initiatives, as well as efforts such as Little Kindness, an organization that delivers Chemotherapy Care bags to four infusion centers across our region. Fridays are for the Foundation! For the next few months, we will continue to highlight our incredible Tipp Foundation Board Members - be sure to keep an eye out for your favorite volunteer!

Today, we are featuring Heather Bailey, a long time Tipp Foundation volunteer and a passionate advocate for philanthropy and community service. Heather oversees the Tipp Foundation's outreach efforts, coordinating new funds, legacy relationship and annual gift campaigns. Heather also produces our Annual Report, which is always packed with full of local art and a summary about the Tipp Foundation's work over the past year. They are informative as well as beautiful to look at!

Heather's Favorite Quote: "I prefer to believe the best in everyone - it saves so much time." ~Rudyard Kipling

The person who has most influenced Heather: "Without a doubt, my life was most influenced by my grandparents, Jane and Emmert Studebaker of Bethel Township. They taught me about hard work and giving back. Every day, I think about them and hope I made them proud." (the two older photos are of Jane and Emmert Studebaker).

The person who inspires Heather now: "I admire everyone who steps forward to make a difference in a community, region or the world."

Heather's advice to young people today: "Get involved in your community! It's a fun way to meet people and shape your town."

Heather's favorite thing to do in her spare time: "Lately, I 've been enjoying seeing the world. Back in college, I saw a sign at a travel agency. It said "See the world before you leave it." That's what I'm trying to do." (Heather most recently traveled to Mongolia, which is where her incredible photo was taken!)

What serving on the Tipp Foundation means to Heather: "When I look at the unique purposes of each fund (now up to 68!) I see the future of 45371. Each fund's purpose endows the security of these projects - art, ecology, safety, ect. Paying attention to this means I understand more about our town's future long after I am gone. I like that."
