We celebrate the life of Mary Radle who passed away this week, only two days shy of her 103rd birthday.  Mary and husband Woodrow were champions of the outdoors and Bethel Schools. The family requests that, if you desire, memorial donations may be made to the Radle Fund for Science Education, P. Each birthday is a gift and worthy of celebration, but 100 years deserves special recognition! It has been said that, "We make a living by what we get, we make a life by what we give." If this is true, Mary Radle is celebrating 100 years of a beautiful life.

Bethel Township was home to the Radle family for decades. It is here that they have chosen to leave a legacy for the community they love. In appreciation of her support, students from the Bethel Local Schools' science programs created over 75 birthday cards for Mary's big day....a few are below.

Dave Grim this month says good-bye to his service on the Tipp City Foundation board, an organization he has seen grow considerably over the past decade.

“It has been 10 years,” Grim said of his board service. “I am not a 30-, 40-year board member. It is time for some younger blood to come in.”

Grim was familiar with the foundation for many years. His father, the late Jim Kyle, was on the foundation board for more than 30 years. In those days, the board was just a few members who would meet at someone’s home. “The foundation came to the house” regularly, he said.

Grim joined the board a few years after his dad left. “I didn’t take his spot. It was probably five to 10 years before I went on,” he said.

When board member Mike Lightle was preparing to leave, he approached Grim about interest in serving, saying his background in marketing would be a plus for the organization.

“It sounded like fun and I wanted to get involved,” Grim said of that discussion in 2010. “It has been a good organization. It has grown a lot in those 10 years.”

Among his initial work with the foundation was on a new website that allowed for donating online, a change that made a lot of difference, he said.

During the past 10 years, the foundation has added more than 25 new funds as efforts continue to spread the word of its offerings and its benefits.

Other changes have included the addition of the annual donor reception to which everyone who donates to the foundation during the past year is invited. The reception is paid for by marketing sponsors, not foundation funds.

With the growth in funds and donations, the amount in grants annually has increased from $50,000 to more than $100,000.

“That is the community. This community gives. They are very generous,” Grim said.

He has served as foundation treasurer the past five years, a role he said he enjoyed. The new treasurer will be Diana Featherstone.

Grim said he enjoyed the treasurer role. “You stay on top of those donating. You see them in town and you can thank them personally. I have really enjoyed doing that,” he said.

Grim said he enjoyed the foundation board’s camaraderie. “We have a really talented board. They are workers. We don’t have members getting on the foundation just to be something on their resume,” he said. “It is a pretty well-run organization. It is fun to give money away.”

A graduate of Tippecanoe High School, Grim and his wife, Kelley, have been married 40 years. They have three adult daughters, Melanie and Sarah, who live in South Carolina, and Angela who lives in Columbus. They also have four grandchildren.

He worked for 21 years at Springhill Nurseries and now another 21 years with a horticulture marketing firm in partnership with a friend with a nursery in Alabama.

Grim said the foundation is a glue that keeps the community together. “You can help organizations that need help or you can help individuals that need help,” he said.

Ernest Clay Back had a love of history while Sarah Gross had an incredibly competitive spirit.

Both died too young.

Both are remembered through scholarships awarded in their memory through the Tipp City Foundation.

This was the first year the Ernest Clay Back Scholarship for History and the Sarah Gross Scholarship for Sportsmanship Fund were awarded.

Back and his wife of 41 years, Mara Back Demers, ran the Tippecanoe Frontier Trading Company in downtown Tipp City for 30 years. He started the Old Northwest Rendezvous in the early 1980s, attracting people from all over to participate in historical camping and a return to life in the 1700s and early 1800s, including dressing for the time period, Demers said .

He had an array of interests from history to off track racing, art, carpentry, photography, mechanics and was a voracious reader.

Ernie Back died at age 64 in 2000.

“He was a very kind-hearted person. He taught his boys you give 110 percent,” Mara Back Demers said. They had two sons, Steven Back and Timothy Back. The three came together to create the scholarship to be awarded to a student interested in history.

“When people met him, he automatically was their friend,” Mara Back Demers said of Ernie.  

Gross, the daughter of Michael and Betty Gross, was a graduate of Tippecanoe High School where she played soccer, basketball and softball and held several basketball records. 

She received an undergraduate degree and an MBA from the University of Dayton where she was recognized for outstanding academic achievement.

Sarah worked as a marketing professor at Sinclair Community College and was recipient of the National Institute of Staff and Organization Development Teaching Excellent award and the 2007 Wal-Mart Teaching Excellence award by the Association of Collegiate Business Schools and Programs.

 Sarah died at age 44 in November 2017.

“She was incredibly competitive. If she was going to do something, she was going to do it with whole heart,” Betty Gross said.

Sarah was described as “the kindest soul” who always tried to help others. “If she knew how to do something, she wanted to impart it on another, if they wanted,” her mother said. “She never had a bad word to say about anyone,” she said.

An avid rock climber, Sarah continued to pursue an active lifestyle. “She never sat still,” Betty Gross said.

The scholarship was established as a way to honor Sarah’s memory, Betty Gross said.

The Tipp City Foundation has 14 scholarship funds from families committed to seeing students excel beyond high school. The scholarships are awarded to students of Tippecanoe, Bethel and Miami East high schools.

April Mystery

While jigsaw puzzles have made a comeback as a pastime during the COVID-19 stay at home orders, the Tipp City Foundation is seeking help to solve a puzzle of a different kind.

For the past decade, Heather Bailey of the foundation has been working to develop a legacy donors archive of backgrounds and photos of those donors who have made estate gifts called legacy donations.

These donations have been made to the foundation since 1943 through people’s wills and estates.

“When we receive those gifts, we make a commitment to honor the charitable dreams those donors wanted fulfilled,” Bailey said. The donors usually told the foundation in advance their goals for use of the grant dollars from their specific fund.

Over the 10 years biographical information and photos of donors have been compiled for the legacy archive for most but not all individuals.

This is where the mystery comes in. Despite extensive searches, photos and added biographical information on two legacy donors from years past have not been found.

They are Emma Henke Warner, 1862-1947, and William H. Kendig, 1870-1956.

This information is known about Emma Henke Warner: Emma left a gift in memory of her dad, August Henke. At the time of his death in 1923, the obituary described him as Tippecanoe’s oldest citizen.  Emma’s gift became an endowment for the “comfort and support for needy and aged men.” In addition to Emma’s photo, Bailey said the foundation would love to also have a photo of August Henke.

William H. Kendig’s legacy gift was used to support area youth. He and his wife, Loletha lived for a short time at North Third and Plum streets and had no children of their own.

“It means so much to me personally that these people live on through the foundation. I feel like it is our commitment to them in turn for their commitment to the community,” Bailey said.

The challenge to the community is to use possible added time during the COVID-19 pandemic stay at home orders to help the foundation locate the photos and any other information by sorting through scrapbooks, closets and attics.

If a photo of Emma Henke Warner, William Kendig or August Henke is found, the person with the photo is asked to contact foundation president Dee Gills through the foundation at 937-528-2482 or info@tippfoundation.org.

Hopes are the foundation can complete its archive, on display on the foundation web site, honoring those who have left it estate assets. “We take this obligation very seriously,” Bailey said.

Food assistance requests rise at Needy Basket as COVID-19 spins household incomes toward uncertainty.  Sensing an urgent need, the Tipp City Foundation reached out to this food pantry to see how it could help.

Here’s how the foundation helped, and here’s how you can help, too.

A grant has been awarded by the distribution committee.  Like all donations dated and delivered to the Needy Basket after May 10th, but before June 20th, it will be eligible for a matching donation of up to $10,000 from the Meijer Simply Give Program.  Anyone interested in also doubling their gift is encouraged to also donate at this time.
